3 - (SYM 44) Feasibility of a Mobile Mindful Parenting Intervention for Black and Latina/e Mothers of Toddlers

The demands of parenthood are often stressful; however, high levels of parental stress can have deleterious intergenerational consequences for parents’ and children’s well-being (e.g., Deater-Deckard, 2004; Putnick et al., 2008). Black and Latina/e (B&L) mothers report greater parental stress than non-Latine White mothers (Nam et al., 2015), in part due to compounding racism-related stress (e.g., Anderson & Stevenson, 2019). However, B&L mothers are less likely to receive equitable mental healthcare in the years after giving birth (e.g., Sidebottom et al., 2021). Research assessing parental stress interventions have not included enough B&L mothers to establish treatment feasibility, efficacy, or effectiveness in these groups, nor have they addressed racism as a parental stressor. This mixed-methods study is examining the feasibility of a mobile mindfulness parenting intervention tailored for B&L mothers of infants and toddlers. This study’s intervention, titled “Mindful Awareness Training to Reduce Intergenerational Affect Regulation Challenges” (MATRIARCH) is a brief 10-day intervention based on the Mindful Parenting protocol (Bögels & Restifo, 2013). B&L mothers (n=70) are being recruited through Prolific Academic and are completing pre-, daily, and post-assessment measures assessing feasibility (i.e., demand, acceptability) and stress. Intervention acceptability is measured by Likert scale, assessing participants’ overall rating of intervention videos, helpfulness of content, and ease of understanding content. The number of MATRIARCH sessions completed will measure demand. Stress is assessed with the Parenting Stress Index, Perceived Stress Scale, and Racial Trauma Scale. Participants also complete open-ended questions pertaining to feasibility. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests to assess pre- and post-test differences. Qualitative data will be analyzed using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC). Data analysis will be completed prior to the meeting. Understanding B&L mothers’ attitudes towards mindfulness and mobile parenting interventions can help practitioners design culturally tailored and accessible support to reduce inequities due to parental stress.
