Session: Promoting Success in School: Identifying Key Elements of Effective Organizational Skills Training Interventions

Skills training interventions are well-established treatments for youth with organization, time management, and planning (OTMP) deficits. Promoting skills generalization is a key consideration in providing skills training. Given that parent involvement in education is known to contribute to positive student outcomes, it is likely that parent involvement in skills training programs is similarly beneficial. In addition, teacher support of child skills training might also result in improved skills generalization and outcomes. This presentation will address this question using school-based Organizational Skills Training at the tier 2 level as an exemplar. OST includes parent and teacher involvement in intervention to promote student use of OTMP skills at home and school and has been found to be effective in clinics and schools with large effect sizes. The purpose of this presentation is to examine associations between parent and teacher involvement in OST-T2 and improvements in children’s OTMP skills.
Participants included 88 students who received OST-T2 from school providers in 10 schools (subsidized lunch rate = 9-100%) as part of a cluster randomized trial. Parent and teacher attendance at two meetings and school provider ratings of parent and teacher engagement in each meeting will be used as the measure of parent and teacher involvement. Primary outcome measures are the Children’s Organizational Skills Scale – Parent (COSS-P) and Teacher (COSS-T), designed to evaluate children’s demonstration of OTMP skills at home and school.
Findings generally indicated that parent and teacher meeting attendance was related to student outcomes with small to medium effects. Students whose parents attended the first meeting had greater improvement in parent-reported OTMP skills and students whose parents attended the second meeting had greater improvement in teacher-reported skills (d = 0.34). Teacher attendance revealed similar results, with greater improvement in teacher-rated skills for students whose teacher attended the first meeting (d = 0.42), and greater improvement in both parent- (d = 0.57) and teacher-rated skills (d = 0.32) for students whose teacher attended the second meeting. Additional analyses will examine school provider ratings of engagement in the meetings. Consistent with literature related to parent involvement in education, parent and teacher involvement in OST-T2 is related to improvements in student use of OTMP skills at school and home.
