1 - (SYM 59) the Help Your Keiki Website: Incorporating Youth and Caregiver Voice into Public Large-scale Dissemination Strategies

In 2022, 60.3% of youth with major depression did not receive mental health treatment (Mental Health America, 2022). Research suggests that youth are more likely to engage in treatment when recommended by caregivers, highlighting the need to inform caregivers on various treatment options (Boulter & Rickwood, 2013; Hurley et al., 2019). Developing dissemination strategies that incorporate consumer voice may help to increase youth mental health service use. The Help Your Keiki (HYK; https://www.helpyourkeiki.com/; “keiki” is the Hawaiian word for child) website is an innovative dissemination strategy developed in partnership between the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Health Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division, University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa, and family and community partners. All language and major components of HYK are approved or co-designed with consumers, with a goal to share treatment information directly to consumers. Since its launch in 2012, HYK has been endorsed by the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and has reached users in Hawai’i and across the world (Okamura et al., 2018). In a review of HYK analytics, reach and penetration metrics from 2012 to 2018 noted that the site hosted 29,100 unique user visits from 150 different countries (Okamura et al., 2018). In January 2023, HYK hosted 945 unique user visits from five countries, representing an approximate 235% increase in monthly unique users compared to averaged monthly metrics from 2012 to 2018. The dramatic increase in HYK access provides an opportunity to further understand consumer-facing dissemination strategies for youth mental health. To our knowledge, HYK is the only website that intersects practice element ontology, youth mental health evidence-based practice, and consumer voice and leadership. This presentation will provide updated HYK analytics, preliminary caregiver-informed feedback, discuss incorporating youth and families’ voice in successful dissemination strategy development, and how HYK serves as a quality improvement mechanism built into the architecture of Hawaii’s youth public mental health system.
