4 - (SYM 63) You Will Be Gaining Each and Every Time You Come Here”: Feasibility and Acceptability of a Task-shared Intervention for Adherence and Depression (CBT-AD) in People Living with HIV in South Africa

Task-shared interventions are needed to address depression in people living with HIV (PWH) in low resource settings like South Africa. Depression is more prevalent among people living with HIV and it often compromises health behaviors including adherence to antiretroviral therapy. The Ziphamandla trial documented the effectiveness of a task-shared, cognitive-behavioral intervention for adherence and depression (CBT-AD) in PWH in South Africa. To gain insight into the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention, qualitative exit interviews were conducted with a random subset of 20 percent of the participants who received the intervention (n=16). Overall, the intervention was described as feasible and acceptable. As one participant stated, “You know I've discovered that the more you come to the sessions, the more you get help, the more you also feel at ease with maybe the problems that you had, so you will be gaining each and every time you come here.” The adherence skills gained from the Life Steps session were also illustrated. As one participant explained, “You know like if maybe I'm going out and I don't know when am I going to be back, that's when I decide that I'm going to take my medication earlier than the time I'm supposed to take them you know?” Findings also revealed key themes with regards to acceptability, including the characteristics of the provider, intervention content, and cultural alignment, and with regards to feasibility, including the setting and timing of the intervention sessions and the use of appointment reminders. These valuable lessons learned can help inform the implementation design in a future implementation science trial.
