Supervision has long been recognized as a highly influential aspect of training within psychology (Barrett, Gonsalvez, & Shires, 2020). Despite the developing body of literature on supervision, there remains a lack of empirical investigations into evidence-based practice and scientist–practitioner competence within supervision during psychology training (Barrett et al., 2020), especially in acute, inpatient care settings. Given the critical role supervision plays in fostering trainee competence, the supervision literature calls for empirical research to assess the current state and quality of existing supervision practices for psychology students in psychiatric inpatient settings. To be considered an evidence-based intervention, supervision for psychology trainees must be grounded in research evidence (Milne & Westerman, 2001). Due to the aforementioned lack of relevant literature, in addition to the ever-evolving role of psychologists in acute psychiatric inpatient settings, evidence-based supervision is lacking. This presents challenges to the effective delivery of supervision to trainees given the rotating shift schedules of providers and varying clinical roles, both direct and indirect, that psychology teams are navigating on a daily basis. If supervision is to be used to support clinical competence in trainees, it should be based on evidence-based practice and include effective supervisor methods and techniques. For example, supervisees in the inpatient setting would benefit from effective supervision on adapting CBT for psychosis, DBT, and other evidence-based modalities for the short-term psychiatric inpatient setting. This project provides an overview of the current literature, qualitative information regarding necessary adaptations for effective inpatient-setting supervision, and recommendations for evidence-based supervision practices. Future research should prioritize collecting quantitative data on the specific features of evidence-based supervision activities and methods, tracking attainment of evidence-based practice in supervisees to determine if supervision is translating into competence in supervisees, and determining whether evidence-based supervision practice translates into client outcomes in acute psychiatric inpatient care settings.
