As adolescence is considered to be a critical period of development, the risk of developing mental health problems such as suicidal behavior increases during this stage. Since parents often hold the role as the primary support system, we aim to investigate the influence of parent-youth relationships on suicidality in adolescents. In this study, adolescents between the ages of 11-16 were asked to report on suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Both youth and their mothers reported on maternal involvement, autonomy granting, and participated in a dyadic confrontation with one another. We hypothesized that high parent-youth relationship quality predicted lower suicidality in adolescence. Our results present that there was a significant difference in mother-reported maternal involvement and in observed warmth from child to mother between youth who reported suicidality and no suicidality. Importantly, there were no significant differences in observed warmth from mother to youth and in youth-reported maternal relationship quality. This suggests that youth who exhibit less warmth in mother-youth interactions and mothers who endorse low levels of involvement are at higher risk of reporting suicidality.
