(PS9-D97) Change in Alcohol Use During COVID-19 Lockdown Moderates the Relationship Between Depression and Suicidality Among Citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic

Lockdowns as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted many facets of individual behavior and mental health. The present study examines the relationship between suicidality, depression, and alcohol use change during lockdown in a Kyrgyz sample (N=2122; Mage=38.09, SD=14.0; 70% female, 27.8% male). Moderation analyses indicate that alcohol use change (coded as “alcohol use increased”, “alcohol use remained the same” and “alcohol use decreased”) during lockdown moderates the relationship between depression and suicidality (F(5, 2206)=58.51, p< .001, R2=.12). Suicidality was not significantly different between those whose alcohol use decreased and those whose use stayed the same (t(2206)=-.90, p=.37), however suicidality was significantly increased for those whose alcohol use increased compared to those whose use stayed the same (t(2206)=18.49, p< .001). Additionally, the impact of depression on suicidality was not significantly different between those whose alcohol use decreased or remained the same (t(2206)=-1.60, p=.11), however the relationship between depression and suicidality was significantly different for those who alcohol use increased compared to those whose use remained the same (t(2206)=2.17, p< .05). Results suggest that, during lockdown conditions, it is important to monitor suicidality in individuals with depression and especially those whose alcohol use increases; early identification of changes in depression and/or alcohol use may prove helpful in identification of changes in suicide risk. This has particularly significant implications in this population, as suicide is a traditionally sensitive subject in the Kyrgyz Republic and is not often discussed, and when suicidality is identified as a concern outpatient care may be lacking.
